FAQ

  • Metal Roofing FAQ

    Q. How much does a metal roof cost vs typical roof?

    A. Because Metal Roofs are a premium roof lasting
3-5 times longer than asphalt you can expect it
to cost 2X-3X times more than asphalt. In
comparison to  a cedar shake roof or a slate roof
expect  metal roofing to cost less

    Q. How many metal roof types are there to
          choose from?

    A.  3 basic metal roofs are offered for the
the residential home, Standing Seam Panels,

         Corrugated Panel and Metal Shingles

    Q. What is the difference between a Standing Seam Metal Roof panel and a Corrugated Metal Panel roof?

    A. The crucial difference is the fastening system,
Standing Seam panels are installed with a
        concealed clip fastener system, located
        underneath the panel surface. Corrugated
panels  are installed with exposed screws and
washer, the average home will require 1600
        screws.

Standing Seam Panels should only be installed a
professionally trained roofer but most handy DIY
can typically install Corrugated Metal roofs

    Q. How long will my metal roof last?

    A. Depending on your metal roof selection
Corrugated Metal roofs typically 20 years without
       maintenance, Standing Seam Roofs typically

35-50+ years depending on the environment.

        No maintenance is required

Quality brands of Metal Shingle also expect 35-
50 + years, no maintenance required

    Q. Does a metal roof go over the existing shingles?

    A. Check the manufacturer's guidelines. In most
cases, only Corrugated Metal Roofs can be
installed over existing asphalt roofs. Although
this is not  good practice as moisture can be
trapped between the roofs causing the
development of rot and mold additionally if the
roof is leaking the roof deck cannot be examined
        without stripping  the existing roof

    Q. What does my lifetime warranty on my asphalt shingle mean?

    A. This is a warranty against factory defects.

Asphalt roofs will weather away to nothing and

will most likely require replacement long

         before the warranty period

    Q. Are metal roofs worth it?

    A. Metal Roofs add instant curb appeal and the
ultimate protection against winter ice dams,
and reflect the summer sun's radiant heat away
from your home reducing energy costs by 10-
25% and can be 100 degrees cooler on the
        surface that traditional asphalt roofs.

    Q. Are all metal paint color finishes the same?

    A. The short answer is no! PVDF & SMP finishes
are the most durable but there are dozens of
         others.

Inferior color finishes will chalk, chip, fade,
cause rust and greatly reduce the metal panel
         life

    Q. What is the best metal roof brand for my
          home?

    A. Drexel for Standing Seam Panel and True Nature
for metal shingles are our favorite due to quality
of paint finishes, application guidlines, product
support and decades of proven field durability
        and beauty

    Q. What is oil canning in Metal Roofing?

    A. It is waviness in the metal and can vary in
visibility due to lighting conditions and metal
type. All metals types can be effected.

Some causes are thermal expansion, uneven
roof substrate, poor installation, milling process
at during  fabrication  at the manufacturing
         plant.

    Q. Can oil canning be fixed or minimized?

    A. Short answer is no. But ask your metal roofing
specialists about adding stiffening ribs or "clip
relief" to the panels prior to installation, this
relieves the tension in the metal-reducing the
chances of oil canning. Typically this can be
        done at  no charge

    Q. Pros and Cons of a metal roof

Pros - Provides the best  roof protection
against wind, rain, ice dams, snow.
